1. The Diameter: Getting it right from the start makes all the difference! You can do this by locating a peg at your centre point of your choice and with a string attached, scribe a circle to the known diameter. This will, without a doubt, help you to get it right. It is at this point that you see a making of a circular space from seemingly square or rigid pieces.
2. The Doorway: Now position the door in the right direction. North facing for the Southern Hemisphere and South for the Northern Hemisphere. This is the ideal positioning but East is also a good direction. The main thing is that there is protection from the prevailing weather. Pass the Girth Rope through the top hole in the frame and attach it with a clove hitch on the inside. (For Window frame attachment ref No.10 below).
3. The Lattice Work: unfolds, stretches out around the curve of the circle and is roped to the door with hitches at every crossing. The lattice panels, splice together really well and are tied together with a rope. As the lattice unfolds and is stretched out it will bend (by its very nature) around the circle and therefore stands up by itself until tied. The trick here is to get the top crosses of the lattice, at the same height as the door so the roofing rafters (slats) continue over the doorway at the same height level.
4. The Girth Rope: this is the most crucial rope on the Yurt, as it performs the role of a retaining collar to allow the weight of the roof to bear down and transfer the weight to the walls. Do not pull this too tight, just enough to retain the wall vertical, as when the roof weight bears down it will tighten up. Pass the rope through the top hole of the door frame and distribute the retaining hitch over two cross members. See Photos
5. The Hub (wheel): Hold this up in place with the aid of a prop or a tall person. The 4 metre is 2.5 metres high. The 5 Metre is 2.75 metres high and the 6 metre is 3 metres high. Orientate the main spoke crossing towards the door with your 4 directions correctly oriented. The 7 mtr and larger Yurts will require a platform, a scaffolding or a crane to lift and position the Hub, while the slats or rafters are located.
6. The Rafters (or Slats): Quickly locate 6 or 8 slats in opposing positions to take the weight. Begin counting from the doorway around the hub in sets of 7, 8 or 9 depending on the diameter, counting the corresponding location crosses on the top of the lattice. Each slat has a rectangular end that locates into the hub, often the slats are slightly bent so position the bend upwards. The other end has a small loop which is put over the inside member of the crossed lattice, so as it is supported by the outside one. There are 96 slats for a 6 metre Yurt.
7. Clothing your Yurt: Now that you have the frame completed with the hub parallel to the ground and the walls vertical and the tension on the girth just right, it is time to put on its clothes! The wall felt goes on first with a tie at the doorway. You can also start at the middle back and work to either side around towards the door. Lift the felt up clear of the ground folding it over on to the slats where the provided ties are attached to every 3rd or 4th slat. Next is the roof felt which is in one piece also, like a hat, it simply sits there centred on the hub and overlapping the walls a little.
8. The canvas: is put on in one piece also by commencing with the doorway and holding the opening fast against the frame while another person pushes the canvas up and over the felt. These two processes can be helped along by the aid of two slats which can be removed from over the doorway and slid back later without any problem. These slats will really help with the pushing of the felt and the canvas making the job much easier.
9. The 3 horse hair binding ropes: are placed around the walls and passed through the holes in the door frame and attached in the same manner as the Girth. With some minor adjustments to the canvas and the sliding on of the hub cover by two people on opposing sides pull-sawing the flap-cover up, your yurt is now fully dressed and ready to move into.
10. Note: If you have purchased windows and need instruction here it is:
When setting up the door attach the window frames (right & left) to the frame using the bolts provided bending them slightly to reflect the curvature. If you have windows at the back or sides then pay attention to the lattice lengths as there will be some shorter than others. Attach the ropes in the same manner with the height of the walls determined by the frames.
